What happened
Hackers removed a Flock Safety camera from a roadway, cloned its internal storage, and recovered an encryption key that unlocked videos of thousands of vehicle detections. The data, shared with 404 Media, Distributed Denial of Secrets, and WIRED, shows that the camera’s on‑device software explicitly identifies vehicles, license plates, bicycles, and people.
Logs indicate the device captured dozens of images per passing vehicle and generated over a million images in several weeks. While the most sensitive license‑plate reader data remained encrypted, the breach demonstrates that Flock’s claimed on‑device encryption does not fully protect all captured content.
The incident raises questions about the security of roadside surveillance systems and the privacy of individuals recorded by them.
