Cyprus Aims to Maintain Halloumi's Protected Status
WHY IT MATTERS
Maintaining halloumi's protected status is crucial for Cyprus' economy and national identity, with the product being a significant contributor to the country's exports and supporting thousands of jobs.
What happened
Cyprus' agriculture ministry is working to maintain the protected designation of origin status of halloumi, a national dairy product. Exports of halloumi exceed €350 million per year, supporting thousands of jobs.
The government aims to ensure that PDO halloumi complies with regulations by 2029. To achieve this, the ministry has implemented a comprehensive framework of actions, including strengthening sheep and goat milk production and improving control mechanisms.
Two committees have been formed to oversee the process. The government also provides subsidies to sheep and goat farmers, with around €4m per year in subsidies.
