What happened
At noon on August 31, Palangkaraya in Central Kalimantan recorded an air quality index of 780, the highest in Indonesia and classified as hazardous. The spike follows widespread forest fires that have released large amounts of smoke into the atmosphere.
In response, a Japan Self‑Defense Force transport ship departed Hiroshima and is enroute to Indonesia to provide firefighting support.
The arrival of the ship is expected to bolster local firefighting capacity and help mitigate further air pollution and environmental damage.
