Heal Fertility Centre Reopens After Suspension Lifted
WHY IT MATTERS
The reopening restores access to essential assisted reproductive services for patients, demonstrating regulatory confidence in the centre’s improved safety protocols.
What happened
The Hong Kong Department of Health has lifted the earlier directive suspension on Heal Fertility, allowing the centre to accept new patients for assisted reproductive technology procedures from tomorrow. The decision follows a special meeting by the Council on Human Reproductive Technology, which reviewed the centre’s licence after a serious untoward event involving a mix‑up of embryo biopsy specimens.
An unannounced on‑site inspection on September 22 confirmed that Heal Fertility has implemented comprehensive remedial measures, including refined sample‑handling procedures, enhanced staff training, upgraded laboratory management, CCTV surveillance, biometric locks on cryostorage tanks, and improved sample identification and verification. The council noted that the key personnel involved in the incident have left and new staff have been recruited and trained.
With these safeguards in place, the council authorised the full resumption of all 17 treatment services covered by the licence, while pledging continued close monitoring of the centre’s performance.
