AI Model Uses Past Mammograms to Forecast Breast Cancer Risk
WHY IT MATTERS
It could enable earlier, personalized screening, potentially catching cancers before they become symptomatic and improving outcomes.
What happened
Researchers at NYU Langone Health developed an AI model that analyzes several years of a woman's 3D mammograms to estimate the risk of breast cancer within the next five years. The study used more than 313,000 images from over 161,000 women.
Unlike conventional assessments that rely on family history or genetics, the algorithm detects subtle changes in breast tissue over time. While the tool is still a research prototype and not FDA‑approved, it could allow clinicians to identify women who might benefit from additional screening, such as MRI, without extra imaging.
The team plans to test the model on data from other centers and equipment.
