What happened
The Hong Kong Labour Department has announced enhancements to the Heat Stress at Work Warning system to better safeguard employees working in hot weather or high-temperature environments. Two new conditions will trigger different levels of the system: an 'Extremely Hot Weather' Special Alert from the Hong Kong Observatory will lower the monitoring threshold for a higher warning level, and temperatures reaching 35 degrees Celsius or above will automatically raise the warning level by one step.
Employers must conduct heat-stress risk assessments and implement prevention measures, such as rescheduling work shifts and providing ventilation and cooling equipment.
The department will review the system's operation and make improvements, including studying additional data indicators.
