UN Envoy Maria Angela Holguin Cancels Cyprus Visit Over Health Concerns

UN Secretary‑General Antonio Guterres’s personal envoy, Maria Angela Holguin, has cancelled her planned trip to Cyprus on September 10 because doctors advised her not to travel by air. The visit had been rescheduled after an earlier postponement and would have been Holguin’s first trip to the island since Guterres’s July visit. She was expected to attend the September 9 meeting between President Nikos Christodoulides and Turkish‑Cypriot leader Tufan Erhurman. With the trip cancelled, Holguin will now seek to meet the two leaders on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York. President Christodoulides said he hopes a document outlining convergences on the Cyprus problem will be ready before Holguin’s next visit, potentially providing a basis for an expanded conference and the resumption of negotiations. He added that once convergences are agreed, the negotiating acquis should be preserved and talks could restart on divergences.
