UN envoy warns Cyprus peace talks window closing

United Nations Cyprus problem envoy Maria Angela Holguin said the window for progress on the Cyprus dispute is closing after a high‑level week in New York that produced no breakthroughs. She warned that rising tensions in the Middle East and eastern Mediterranean could further harm Cyprus and that diplomatic space for dialogue may not remain open. Holguin described last week’s meetings with President Nikos Christodoulides and Turkish‑Cypriot leader Tufan Erhurman, noting that a planned tripartite meeting was not pre‑arranged and that Erhurman declined a New York meeting unless conditions were met. She criticised moves that block Turkish‑Cypriot contacts, calling them counter‑productive, and urged the creation of a bicommunal technical committee on natural disasters and other confidence‑building measures. The planned new crossing point at Mia Milia could boost trade, but political will is lacking. Holguin will visit next month to push for a constructive agenda and a method for future negotiations, stressing that the UN will not dictate outcomes but facilitate compromise.
