Hong Kong Extends TV Licences, Mandates More Local English Content
WHY IT MATTERS
The renewal reflects a government push to boost local English‑language programming, shaping Hong Kong’s media identity and educational outreach for the next decade.
What happened
Hong Kong authorities have renewed the free‑to‑air licences of the city’s three television broadcasters, extending them for 12 years. The Executive Council approved the renewal on Tuesday, setting new conditions that require the stations to increase local production of English‑language national education shows and programmes that “tell good stories” about Hong Kong.
The licences will run until 2039 for HK Television Entertainment and TVB, and until 2040 for i‑Cable.
The move aims to strengthen local content and promote a positive image of the city through mainstream media.
