Hunger Persists Amid Global Abundance, Warns Caritas Internationalis
WHY IT MATTERS
The persistence of hunger highlights a moral failure of solidarity and political will, with widespread hunger not accepted as inevitable in a world of unprecedented wealth and technological advancement.
What happened
According to Caritas Internationalis, an estimated 645 million people experienced hunger in 2025, and more than 2 billion people faced moderate or severe food insecurity.
The World Food Programme expects an increase of 50 million in acute hunger in 2027 due to factors such as conflict, disrupted distribution chains, and rising costs of fertilizers.
Caritas Internationalis calls on governments and international institutions to protect the right to food, invest in small-scale food producers, and support climate-resilient approaches.
