Amex Points Beat $1,100 Hotel Rates in NYC via Leaders Club Transfer
WHY IT MATTERS
Travelers can leverage Amex points to access high‑end NYC hotels at a fraction of cash cost, especially during peak events, while enjoying added perks and potential tax savings.
What happened
During a peak‑season visit to New York City, when the U. N. General Assembly and Fashion Week pushed hotel prices above $1,100 per night, the author tested American Express’s newest transfer partner, Leaders Club.
By transferring 48,000 Amex Membership Rewards points—using the 4:1 ratio—to book a night at the historic Hotel Chelsea, the author secured a stay that normally cost $1,101 cash for just 11,875 Leaders Club points. The rate equated to more than 2¢ per point, surpassing the October 2026 TPG valuation.
The stay included daily housekeeping, turndown service, a complimentary continental breakfast for two, and a possible complimentary bottle of wine. Notably, the author paid no taxes or fees on the award stay, a benefit that appears inconsistent across bookings but could surprise travelers.
