Car Rental Scanning Leak Exposes 153 Million Driver’s Licenses on Dark Web

A recent incident at a major car‑rental agency revealed that an employee’s scan of a customer’s driver’s license was uploaded to the dark web within hours. KrebsOnSecurity’s exposé, published Tuesday, identified the license as one of more than 153 million available through Nexus, a new ID‑theft marketplace. Nexus offers high‑resolution images of both sides of the license, plus infrared and ultraviolet scans that could help counterfeiters create IDs that pass hologram checks. The site also lists other forms of ID for sale, including those belonging to journalists, security researchers, and an FBI assistant director. The rapid availability of such detailed data underscores the speed and scale of modern identity‑theft operations.
