McLaren and Red Bull Lose Appeal in FIA Formula One World Championship
WHY IT MATTERS
This ruling has significant consequences for the 2026 FIA Formula One World Championship, as it affects the Drivers' and Constructors' Championship points. The revised points will be recalculated, potentially impacting the championship standings and the teams' overall performance in the season.
What happened
The International Court of Appeal (ICA) has ruled in favor of the Stewards' decisions regarding two five-second time penalties imposed on Pierre Gasly during the 2026 Monaco Grand Prix. McLaren Racing Limited and Red Bull Racing Limited had lodged an appeal against the Stewards' decisions, but the ICA declared their appeals admissible and granted them, setting aside the Stewards' decisions.
However, the ICA also reimposed the time penalties on Gasly, declaring them to stand.
The ICA has ordered the competent Sporting Authority to draw the consequences of this ruling, including the amendment of the Race Classification and Championship Points.
