What happened
A 76‑square‑kilometer iceberg broke from Greenland’s Petermann Glacier on August 4, 2026, the largest calving event from the glacier since 2020. The ice island drifted an average of 3 km per day toward Nares Strait, where it struck the small rocky outcrop known as Joe Island on August 24.
Satellite images show the berg pivoting away and continuing southwest. The collision did not fragment the iceberg; it remains intact and will gradually fracture under tides, winds, and melting.
The drifting ice will eventually break into smaller pieces, posing navigation hazards and delivering freshwater into the North Atlantic as it melts.
