New Zealand-India Free Trade Agreement Now in Effect
WHY IT MATTERS
The agreement is a significant step towards doubling New Zealand's exports in 10 years, with the potential to benefit suppliers, local businesses, and towns dependent on them.
What happened
The New Zealand-India Free Trade Agreement has come into force, allowing New Zealand exporters to take advantage of tariff-free or reduced tariffs on over half of their exports to India. Trade and Investment Minister Todd McClay announced the agreement's implementation, citing its high quality and the record time of nine months to conclude negotiations.
Key outcomes include the removal of tariffs on sheep meat, wool, and coal, as well as preferential quota access for apples, kiwifruit, and milk albumins. The agreement also sets the stage for further tariff cuts in 2027.
McClay emphasized the importance of diversifying exports in uncertain economic times and encouraged businesses to take advantage of the agreement through New Zealand Trade and Enterprise's support programme.
