New Zealand and India Strengthen Trade Ties with Historic FTA

New Zealand's Trade and Investment Minister Todd McClay welcomed the passing of the India Free Trade Agreement legislation, which secured a significant majority vote of 93-29 in Parliament. The agreement, which will see 57% of New Zealand's exports to India become duty-free from day one, is expected to deliver substantial benefits for the economy. The kiwifruit industry alone estimates it will save around $125 million in tariffs over five years. The FTA also includes faster border clearance and preferential access to India's growing middle class. Negotiations were announced in March 2025, and the agreement is expected to enter into force this year, with the goal of doubling two-way trade by 2030.
