What happened
Indonesia’s peat fires are intensifying at the start of the 2026 fire season, driven by a strengthening El Niño and severe drought that dry out wetlands. The resulting underground smoldering fires burn for months and emit far more fine particles and pollutants than typical tropical forest fires.
