What happened
Between June and August 2026, northeastern India experienced catastrophic monsoon floods that displaced more than 500,000 people and claimed at least 99 lives. New research from the World Weather Attribution (WWA) network attributes the severity of these floods primarily to human activities—rapid urbanization, widespread deforestation, and the destruction of wetlands—rather than to rising global temperatures.
The study focused on the upper Assam region, where the Brahmaputra River and its tributaries routinely overflow during the monsoon season. Researchers, including Arpita Mondal of IIT Bombay and Mariam Zachariah of Imperial College London, analyzed historical weather records and climate models to assess the likelihood of the extreme rainfall that occurred from June 26‑29 and over the 30‑day period from June 20 to July 19.
Their findings indicate that such heavy rainfall is not exceptional, occurring every one to two years, and that there is no detectable climate‑change signal in these events. The results suggest that structural failures and land‑use changes are the main drivers of the floods, underscoring the need for improved infrastructure and sustainable land management in the region.
