Instagram Introduces AI-Generated Profile Label and Enforcement Measures
WHY IT MATTERS
By clearly marking AI-generated profiles and restricting unlabelled accounts, Instagram strengthens user trust, promotes content authenticity, and upholds platform integrity in an era of growing AI‑driven social media presence.
What happened
Instagram has announced a new labeling system for accounts that feature AI-generated personas. The platform will replace the existing “AI creator” tag with an “AI-generated profile” label to make it clear when a profile’s central figure is not a real human.
The change follows complaints that users were misled by accounts that appeared human but were actually AI‑generated. Instagram will actively identify accounts that fail to self‑label and will penalize them by limiting their reach.
The first account highlighted in the announcement is Aitana Lopez, an AI‑created influencer that will now carry the new label. The policy aims to increase transparency and reduce deceptive content on the platform.
