Instagram AI Content Labels Fail, Mislabeling Non‑AI Images and Missing Real AI Creations
WHY IT MATTERS
The unreliable labeling undermines Instagram’s claim to provide clear signals about synthetic media, potentially affecting user trust and the platform’s compliance with emerging content‑authenticity regulations.
What happened
Over the past weeks, Instagram’s AI‑generated content labeling system has malfunctioned. Users report that the platform automatically tags photos that were not produced or edited with generative AI tools, such as images altered with Canva’s Background Remover.
At the same time, genuine AI‑generated images are not being flagged, creating confusion about the authenticity of posts. The cause of the mislabeling appears to vary, but the result is a loss of trust in Instagram’s AI detection.
Meta has not yet issued a public explanation or timeline for a fix.
