New Zealand Tourism Nears Pre‑Pandemic Levels, Boosting Jobs and Economy
WHY IT MATTERS
Tourism’s recovery fuels New Zealand’s economy, supporting jobs and income for a significant portion of the workforce.
What happened
Tourism and Hospitality Minister Louise Upston announced that international visitor arrivals in August 2026 reached 99 % of the 2019 figure, according to Stats NZ data released today. The government’s 2025 target to match 2019 levels by 2026 is on track, with record arrivals from Australia, Taiwan, Singapore, and a 32 % rise from China.
Visitor numbers from the United States, Malaysia, Indonesia, and Japan also grew. Upston highlighted that tourism is New Zealand’s second‑largest export earner and directly or indirectly employs one in nine Kiwis.
The sector’s rebound is seen as a key driver of economic growth, creating jobs, incomes, and opportunities for New Zealanders.
