Cloudflare Launches Open‑Beta Traces for End‑to‑End Request Visibility
WHY IT MATTERS
By giving developers a single, end‑to‑end view of how requests move through Cloudflare and beyond, Traces simplify debugging, performance tuning, and security investigations while integrating seamlessly with existing observability tools.
What happened
Cloudflare today introduced Cloudflare Traces in open beta, extending automatic request tracing beyond Workers to the entire Cloudflare request path. The new feature automatically records spans for security rules, transformations, caching, routing, Worker execution, and origin handling, and can continue the trace into services running on Cloudflare or elsewhere.
Users can set a baseline sampling rate and fine‑tune coverage with Trace Rules that target specific paths, headers, IPs, or geographies. Traces accept and propagate W3C traceparent headers, allowing a single distributed trace to span the entire stack.
Traces are viewable in the Cloudflare dashboard and can be exported via OpenTelemetry Protocol (OTLP) to any compatible observability backend, enabling unified analysis across the platform and the customer’s own services.
