Iraq Sees Localized Displacement as February 2026 Hostilities Escalate

During February 2026, Iraq experienced a surge of airstrikes, missile incidents and drone attacks, including strikes in Jurf Al‑Sakhar south of Baghdad and repeated attacks on strategic sites in the Kurdistan Region. The attacks heightened insecurity and prompted many families to move temporarily or restrict their movements. By the end of March, the International Organization for Migration had identified at least 90 households displaced and recorded 843 arrivals from Iran, 551 departures to Iran and 181 returnees. Airspace restrictions and security measures disrupted transportation, essential services and livelihoods, especially for women, children, older persons and people with disabilities. The crisis added pressure on host communities already supporting internally displaced persons, returnees and refugees, underscoring the need for rapid preparedness and protection.
