What happened
RTE announced that Ireland will not participate in the 2027 Eurovision Song Contest, marking the second consecutive year of withdrawal. The broadcaster cited the ongoing loss of life in Gaza and the humanitarian crisis as the basis for its decision.
Ireland was one of five countries that abstained from the 2026 contest in protest of Israel’s participation, alongside Iceland, the Netherlands, Slovenia, and Spain. Dutch public broadcaster AvroTros also confirmed a boycott for 2027.
RTE stated it would neither compete nor broadcast the event. The move underscores how escalating geopolitical tensions can directly influence cultural programming and international broadcasting schedules.
