NASA Black Marble Images Reveal Power Outages After Hurricane Isaias
WHY IT MATTERS
The data give emergency teams a precise, real‑time view of outages and recovery, improving response coordination and resource allocation after disasters.
What happened
NASA’s Black Marble HD nighttime light imagery captured widespread power disruptions along the Florida Panhandle after Hurricane Isaias made landfall on Oct 9 as a Category 2 storm. The satellite data show sharp reductions in lights around Pensacola and along U. S.
Route 98 toward Destin, with gaps indicating outages. By Oct 12, many lights had returned, and by Oct 14 the pattern resembled pre‑storm conditions.
The imagery, processed from VIIRS on NOAA‑20, provides high‑resolution insight into the storm’s immediate impacts and recovery pace, aiding emergency responders and decision makers in prioritizing resources. NASA’s Disasters Program is sharing these maps with FEMA, USGS, and local agencies.
