J&K High Court Revives Passport of Tehran University MBBS Student
WHY IT MATTERS
The decision safeguards students’ rights to pursue overseas education and clarifies that parents’ past legal issues cannot impede their children’s future.
What happened
Ibra Khan, a student pursuing an MBBS at Tehran University, had her passport impounded after authorities linked her to her father’s 1997 legal case. The Jammu & Kashmir High Court, after reviewing the circumstances, recognized that Khan had already completed half of her medical course before the impounding.
Legal representatives argued that she could not be held responsible for her father’s past actions. A division bench therefore ordered the passport’s revival, while allowing authorities to impose conditions on its use.
The ruling enables Khan to resume her studies in Iran and sets a precedent that a child’s educational prospects should not be penalized for a parent’s earlier legal troubles.
