Japan Prepares First Sample‑Return Mission to Mars Moons
WHY IT MATTERS
The mission could provide the first direct samples from Mars’s moons, offering new clues about planetary formation and the potential for life, and it establishes a foundation for future crewed missions to the Martian system.
What happened
Japanese scientists are preparing the uncrewed Martian Moons eXploration (MMX) probe to visit Mars’s moons and bring back samples that could illuminate the origins of the Solar System and life on Earth. The mission, a collaboration with U.
S. and European space agencies, universities, and tech companies, will be the first round‑trip expedition to the Martian region.
MMX’s launch will be carried by the H3 rocket, which is slated to blast off soon. The data and materials returned are expected to lay groundwork for future human exploration of Mars and its moons.
