Tzu Chi Provides Relief Aid to Kumamoto Prefecture After 7.1‑Magnitude Earthquake
WHY IT MATTERS
The assistance tackles urgent shortages of shelter, clean water, and medical supplies, helping residents recover from a disaster that displaced thousands and damaged critical infrastructure.
What happened
A 7. 1‑magnitude earthquake struck Kumamoto Prefecture on July 28, 2026, killing 38 people and injuring 368. The disaster damaged 4,213 homes, leaving 59,000 households without water.
Power outages were fully restored by July 31. On August 2, volunteers from the Buddhist Tzu Chi Foundation (BTCF) arrived with 148 beds and 40 shelter partitions to support 8,480 residents in 206 shelters. BTCF also delivered two patented dual‑mode water purifiers that can produce 3,000 ml per minute electrically or 700 ml per minute manually.
The first aid shipment was airlifted from China on August 1 and reached Yatsushiro City by August 3. BTCF continues to monitor needs and plans further assistance.
