Guam and Northern Marianas Brace for Tropical Storm Champi as Typhoon Watch Issued
WHY IT MATTERS
The impending storm poses significant risks of flooding, high surf, and wind damage that could disrupt communities, infrastructure, and maritime operations across the Marianas.
What happened
The Joint Information Center for the Marianas is partially activated and Governor Lourdes A. Leon Guerrero has placed Guam in Condition of Readiness 2, with Joint Region Marianas declaring Tropical Cyclone Condition of Readiness 2. A Typhoon Watch and Flood Watch cover Guam, Rota, Tinian, and Saipan through Sunday afternoon.
Tropical Storm Champi, currently 750 miles east of Guam, is moving west‑northwest at 12 mph with sustained winds of 45 mph and is expected to strengthen to at least a Category 1 typhoon. Forecasts call for tropical‑storm‑force winds Saturday evening, possible typhoon‑force winds Sunday morning, 7‑9‑foot surf turning 15‑20 feet, 2‑3 foot storm surge, 12‑foot wave runup, and 6‑12 inches of rain.
Residents are urged to secure property, clear drainage, and follow official shelter and evacuation notices. Mariners should keep vessels in port or seek safe harbor.
