Jordan Sees Increased Refugee Returns Amid Ongoing Support Efforts
WHY IT MATTERS
The increased refugee returns highlight the ongoing efforts to support Syrian refugees in Jordan, despite the challenges and lower numbers compared to previous years.
What happened
Jordan's Ministry of Planning and International Cooperation (MOPIC) initiated discussions with the Syrian Government in July to align priorities for supporting Syrian refugees. The discussions aimed to best support refugees, following the first round of consultations for the new Jordan Response Plan.
In September, MOPIC began facilitating the drafting of the narrative with the UN High Commissioner for Refugees' continued support. The number of refugee returns to Syria increased during the summer months, with the highest levels observed in 2026.
This rise was driven by factors such as the end of the school year and improved weather conditions. However, return movements remained lower than those recorded in the comparable period in 2025.
