Cyprus Offers Assistance in Kyrenia Ferry Rescue Operation

The Republic of Cyprus has expressed its readiness to assist in the search-and-rescue operation following the capsize of a passenger ferry off the coast of Kyrenia. The ferry, carrying 267 people, capsized shortly after leaving the new port of Kyrenia. Turkish Cypriot authorities have confirmed that 159 people have been successfully brought ashore, with efforts ongoing to rescue the remaining 108. The Republic of Cyprus has contacted the United Nations peacekeeping force in Cyprus to request assistance in conveying its readiness to offer aid. President Nikos Christodoulides has instructed his chief negotiator to request communication with the Turkish Cypriot leader to make clear the Republic of Cyprus' readiness to provide assistance. A government official stated that when human lives are in danger, the Republic of Cyprus contributes with every available means and has the operational capability to assist immediately.
