Cyprus Justice Ministry Advances New Prison Plans Amid Community Concerns
WHY IT MATTERS
The new prison plans aim to address overcrowding issues in Cyprus' current central prison, which has the highest occupancy rate in the European Union.
What happened
The Cyprus Justice Ministry has moved forward with plans for a new central prison in Ayios Sozomenos, despite objections from local municipalities. Representatives from South Nicosia-Dali and Yeri-Latsia expressed concerns during a meeting with ministry officials. The final decision will be made after the completion of a masterplan and necessary studies.
The new prison is expected to be constructed on a state-owned plot, bordering the two municipalities. The project aims to promote development, create employment opportunities, and strengthen local entrepreneurship. The current central prison in Nicosia has exceeded capacity, housing 1,177 prisoners, and has longstanding issues related to overcrowding.
The new facility is expected to have a capacity of 1,500 inmates, including pre-trial detainees. The ministry has committed to a sincere and productive dialogue with local authorities to ensure their opinions and concerns are taken into account.
