What happened
France is pushing for new European taxes to generate over €60 billion, according to three European diplomats who wished to remain anonymous. The proposed taxes, known as "ressources propres" in Brussels jargon, would allow for increased revenue to fund EU priorities such as defense and competitiveness, while reducing national contributions.
The French support is crucial for reaching an agreement on a budget proposal by the end of the year, ahead of elections in 2027 in France, Italy, Poland, and Spain.
