Latvia Detains Couple Suspected of Spying for Russia on NATO Base
WHY IT MATTERS
The case highlights Russia’s covert intelligence efforts against NATO installations, underscoring the need for stronger counterintelligence and security measures on the alliance’s eastern flank.
What happened
Latvia’s State Security Service (VDD) has detained two Latvian citizens, arrested in June, on suspicion of spying for Russia’s GRU. Authorities say the pair gathered detailed information on the Ādaži military base, home to a NATO brigade, including radar systems and aircraft movements.
One suspect reportedly used a private aircraft to conduct aerial reconnaissance and take photographs of the base. The VDD alleges the activities could aid Russian intelligence and sabotage groups operating in Latvia.
Criminal proceedings were opened on June 27 and the investigation remains ongoing amid growing concerns across NATO’s eastern flank about Russian hybrid operations targeting support for Ukraine.
