Cyprus Leaders Agree UN Resolutions Must Guide Solution, Discuss 19-Point Plan
WHY IT MATTERS
The agreement underscores the continued reliance on UN mandates for resolving Cyprus, setting the stage for renewed negotiations and potential confidence‑building measures before the new UN leadership takes office.
What happened
President Nikos Christodoulides and Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhurman met on Tuesday and confirmed that any settlement of the Cyprus dispute must remain aligned with United Nations Security Council resolutions. The discussion, prompted by the impending end of UN Secretary‑General António Guterres’s term, also covered a 19‑point proposal Christodoulides had presented.
While some points received positive feedback, others were met with negative responses or requests for further review. Both leaders expressed willingness to convene an enlarged meeting—including Greece, Turkey, the United Kingdom, and the UN—before the year’s end to announce a resumption of negotiations.
The UN envoy Maria Angela Holguin is scheduled to visit the island later this month to support these efforts.
