What happened
The Lesotho Red Cross Society has activated the Early Action Protocol for drought in response to evolving El Niño conditions that are expected to affect the 2026/2027 rainfall season. The El Niño event is projected to peak between October 2026 and January/March 2027, coinciding with the main agricultural production season.
This is likely to impact agricultural production, water availability, food security, and household livelihoods, particularly among vulnerable rural communities. According to the Lesotho Vulnerability Assessment Committee, approximately 20% of the population is projected to experience food insecurity from October 2026 to March 2027.
The Government of Lesotho has identified the September to November 2026 period as critical for implementing anticipatory actions before the expected impacts of reduced rainfall become more severe. The Lesotho Red Cross has activated the drought EAP based on the national seasonal rainfall outlook and projected food insecurity vulnerability.
