Cyprus leaders to meet Tuesday as government pushes for tangible progress
WHY IT MATTERS
The meeting could signal a shift toward renewed negotiations, affecting regional stability and EU‑Cyprus relations, and may influence future confidence‑building measures on the island.
What happened
Government spokesman Konstantinos Letymbiotis said he hopes for “tangible steps” in the immediate future on the Cyprus problem, ahead of a Tuesday meeting between Turkish‑Cypriot leader Tufan Erhurman and President Nikos Christodoulides. Letymbiotis expects the discussion to cover next steps and stresses that any real progress must be visible soon.
He noted that Christodoulides’ 19 new discussion points—covering confidence‑building measures, meeting methodology and substantive talks—were intended to revive negotiations, aligning with UN Secretary‑General Antonio Guterres’ three‑pillar framework. Erhurman, however, dismissed the points as “throwing a spanner in the works” and suggested expanding them further.
Letymbiotis also defended Greek‑Cypriot initiatives against Turkish‑Cypriot events, citing EU‑Cyprus alignment after Christodoulides met Ursula von der Leyen at Med9.
