Maccabi Tel Aviv May Play EuroLeague Home Games in Cyprus
WHY IT MATTERS
The decision could have significant implications for Cyprus, with potential operational challenges for the police and the possibility of playing high-risk fixtures in the country.
What happened
Maccabi Tel Aviv's request to play EuroLeague home games in Cyprus is being reviewed. An on-site inspection of the Spyros Kyprianou arena in Limassol will take place on Tuesday to examine security protocols and operational readiness.
The first fixture could be scheduled for 22 October, with the possibility of playing in Limassol through February and potentially extending until April. Cyprus police would need to contend with operational challenges due to the presence of three Turkish teams on Maccabi's EuroLeague schedule.
A preliminary security plan has been drawn up, but the final plan will be coordinated with EuroLeague management and Israeli club representatives. The proposal follows a formal request submitted by Maccabi Tel Aviv to President Nikos Christodoulides.
