Malawi Closes Nyamithuthu Camp After Repatriation of 7,076 Mozambican Asylum Seekers
WHY IT MATTERS
The closure marks the end of a large-scale repatriation but highlights persistent humanitarian gaps and the potential for future asylum inflows amid regional instability.
What happened
Following post‑election unrest in Mozambique, Malawi hosted 7,456 asylum seekers in December 2024. A joint repatriation exercise began 28 February 2025 and ended 13 March, returning 7,076 registered Mozambicans.
Between 13 March and 30 April, Malawi closed the Nyamithuthu Camp after a Refugee Status Determination exercise found 221 of 268 interviewed applicants lacked credible claims, leading to denial of refugee status for all. The camp’s closure left 336 households (671 people) still registered, but the government concluded they did not qualify for protection.
Humanitarian actors noted gaps in WASH infrastructure and ongoing strain on host communities’ health and education services.
