Mali Grapples with Persistent Malnutrition Crisis

The persistent malnutrition crisis in Mali highlights the need for more effective and integrated approaches to address this issue, ensuring that vulnerable populations, particularly children and pregnant women, have access to essential nutrition and healthcare services.
What happened
Mali remains one of the countries most affected by persistent humanitarian crises, with malnutrition being a major concern. According to the latest analysis by the Cadre Harmonisé in March 2024, several regions, including Mopti, Gao, Tombouctou, and Ménaka, are in crisis (IPC 3) or urgent (IPC 4) phases.
The malnutrition situation is severe, with over 26% of children suffering from growth retardation and nearly half of child deaths under five linked to malnutrition. The Nutrition Cluster in Mali is working to address this issue through integrated and adapted approaches, including the use of cash transfers and coupons as humanitarian assistance and nutrition support.
However, these programs remain weak, fragmented, and insufficiently implemented, with limited documentation and harmonization at the national level.
