Mauritania Sees Rise in Transhumance-Related Alerts Amid Drought and Disease

The rise in transhumance-related alerts highlights the need for effective management of pastoral movements and early warning systems to mitigate the impacts of drought and disease in Mauritania.
What happened
The International Organization for Migration's Transhumance Tracking Tool (TTT) has recorded 46 alerts in Mauritania between April and June 2026. The alerts were generated by the tool's early warning system, which monitors movements of livestock and events such as conflicts and natural disasters.
Of the total alerts, 57% were related to movements, while 43% concerned events. The wilaya of Hodh ech Chargui saw 56% of alerts linked to movements, compared to 44% related to events.
In contrast, the wilaya of Guidimagha had 57% of alerts concerning movements and 43% associated with events. The TTT is implemented in collaboration with the National Grouping of Pastoral Associations (GNAP), which facilitates the rapid triggering of alerts in response to threats such as drought, animal diseases, and agropastoral conflicts.
