Mazotos Residents Demand Cancellation of Desalination Plant Decision

Residents of Mazotos and the local community council have formally requested that the government withdraw its decision to build a desalination plant on the coast. The appeal, presented to Agriculture Minister Christos Senekis during a Wednesday meeting, cites a lack of public consultation and the absence of required environmental studies. The Save the Coast group, with 350 members, argues that the project would harm protected marine habitats, including Posidonia oceanica seagrass meadows and nearby coral reefs. An earlier independent study had recommended against locating a plant in the area because of these sensitive ecosystems. The council demands an independent environmental impact assessment, a review of alternative sites, and assurance that national and European environmental procedures are followed. Senekis said the request would be considered, but the decision remains pending.
