McDonald's Distributes Pickle Juice to Chicago Marathon Runners Amid Mixed Expert Opinion
WHY IT MATTERS
The promotion spotlights the trend of unconventional sports nutrition and underscores the importance of evidence‑based guidance for athletes during endurance events.
What happened
McDonald’s is handing out limited‑edition bottles of “Pickle Boost” to runners and spectators during the Chicago Marathon weekend, from October 9 through race day on October 11. The fast‑food chain says the promotion is inspired by the popularity of pickle juice among athletes who use it to relieve muscle cramps during workouts.
Runners can pick up the bottles at a Friday pop‑up on Chicago’s Lakefront Trail and at five McDonald’s locations along or near the marathon route while supplies last. Nutrition experts caution that while some studies suggest pickle juice may help cramps, the evidence is mixed and it offers little fluid or energy compared to a sports drink.
A Texas‑based sports dietitian, Jena Brown, recommends small sips and stretching if a cramp occurs, and advises against debuting the remedy on race day.
