Hong Kong Welcomes New Regulations for GBA Lawyers
WHY IT MATTERS
The new regulations aim to establish a stable and long-term practice regime for GBA lawyers, providing a solid foundation for regional co-operation and the development of the Greater Bay Area.
What happened
The Hong Kong Department of Justice has welcomed the release of new regulations for lawyers in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA). The 'Measures for the Management of the GBA Legal Professional Examination & Practice' were released by the Ministry of Justice on October 5, following the conclusion of a multi-year pilot scheme.
The regulations provide clear guidelines for enrolment requirements, application procedures, and the scope of practice for GBA lawyers. The examination will now take place every two years.
Secretary for Justice Paul Lam expressed his support for the new regulations, stating that they provide solid legal protection and clear guidance for the operation of the GBA lawyers' scheme. The Department of Justice will continue to advance policy initiatives related to GBA legal practice, capitalising on Hong Kong's unique strengths and deepening regional co-operation.
