Australia Remains Far from EU Membership, Focuses on Free Trade and Digital Safety

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese confirmed that Australia is not pursuing EU membership, even after Canada became the EU’s first associate member. Albanese said Australia is “a long way from Europe” and highlighted that Australia’s relations with Canada differ in key areas. He underscored the importance of ASEAN and the Pacific Island Forum for Australia’s regional strategy. The government’s priority is the Australia‑EU free‑trade agreement, which has been advanced by recent legislation. That legislation strengthened eSafety laws, now obligating social media companies to provide information to the eSafety Commissioner. The move signals a tightening of digital oversight while Australia maintains its focus on trade and regional partnerships.
