Microsoft Reorganizes Communications, Brad Smith to Lead
WHY IT MATTERS
The shift centralizes Microsoft’s messaging, reflecting a strategic focus on aligning communications with corporate governance and external relations.
What happened
Microsoft has shifted its communications group from the marketing division into the Corporate, External, and Legal Affairs (CELA) organization, a move that places vice chair and president Brad Smith at the helm of the company’s communications strategy. The change comes as Frank Shaw, the long‑time chief communications officer, announced his departure later this year after nearly three decades of service.
CEO Satya Nadella thanked Shaw in an internal memo for his contributions and noted that Microsoft is actively searching for a replacement.
The realignment signals a tighter integration of corporate messaging with legal and external affairs, potentially streamlining how Microsoft engages stakeholders and manages public communications.
