Mitsero Residents Protest Proposed Asphalt Plant, Call for Independent Environmental Review
WHY IT MATTERS
The protest highlights growing community concerns over pollution and the need for transparent environmental assessments before approving industrial projects in residential areas.
What happened
Residents of the Mitsero region gathered outside the Supreme Court on Monday to protest the planned construction of an asphalt plant. The Environmentalists’ Movement joined the demonstration, supporting the communities’ efforts to withdraw the project.
The group said the area is already heavily affected by nuisance activities and called for the proposed facility to be evaluated on its cumulative environmental impact, capacity, and potential exposure of residents to pollutants. They demand a halt to work on the project and an updated, independent scientific assessment of its health and environmental effects.
The movement also criticized government planning, arguing that locating potentially polluting activities in the area is not a sustainable solution and that affected communities must have a meaningful role in decisions.
