Cloudflare Launches Monetization Gateway Beta to Enable Agent‑Based Payments

What happened
Cloudflare today opened a closed beta of its Monetization Gateway, a new tool that lets domain owners charge AI agents for every request to their sites, APIs, tools or datasets. The gateway uses the HTTP 402 Payment Required status code so a buyer can pay inline with the request, eliminating the need for a separate checkout flow. Payments are settled in USDC on the Base blockchain via Coinbase’s x402 Facilitator, with Cloudflare handling verification, retries and analytics.
Early production customers include Cloudflare’s AI Gateway, which now lets U. S. users pay for inference at request time with a simple header, and Ceramic.
ai, which offers a 50‑millisecond web‑search API that agents can pay for per query. Cloudflare plans to add discoverability, additional payment rails and identity primitives in future releases.
