Cyprus MPs Highlight Overcrowding and Security Concerns at Limassol Schools
WHY IT MATTERS
The overcrowded, insecure conditions threaten student safety and educational quality, underscoring the urgent need for government intervention and sustainable infrastructure planning in Cyprus’s public schools.
What happened
During a Friday visit, members of the House education committee, parents’ associations, and the teacher union Poed inspected the third primary school and nursery school in Ypsonas and schools in Omodos. The Ypsonas school, built with 13 classrooms plus ten prefabricated units, and its nursery, with two rooms and four prefabs, are operating at 130 % capacity, housing 456 children.
MPs noted that the school’s design was for a smaller student body, leading to the cancellation of workshops and the use of temporary huts. Earlier that week, heavy rainfall flooded a classroom.
Poed president Myria Vasiliou warned that the lack of proper planning and inadequate facilities pose serious safety risks for students and staff. Committee chairman Diko MP Chrysanthos Savvides called for long‑term solutions and government action to address the escalating overcrowding and security issues.
