MSF Lebanon: Water is Life - Southern Lebanon's People Must Not Be Punished
WHY IT MATTERS
Restoring water systems is a basic necessity, and the repeated attacks must stop to allow people to return home, rebuild their livelihoods, lives, and dignity. Water is a basic right that Israel must respect, and humanitarian organisations cannot be expected to repeatedly repair essential systems that may be attacked and destroyed again.
What happened
The Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) has reported that Israeli military attacks in Southern Lebanon have damaged and destroyed water infrastructure, preventing families from rebuilding their lives. Since March, attacks have left a trail of devastation, compounding the damage and hardships caused since the September 2024 escalation.
Despite a ceasefire in mid-April, attacks have continued, making several villages inaccessible. MSF teams have witnessed the damage firsthand, noting that water and electricity systems have been particularly affected.
The damage affects the entire water ecosystem, including wells, pumps, filtration units, storage tanks, generators, pipelines, and solar-powered systems. When one component is destroyed, the entire system stops functioning, leaving people without access to a resource indispensable for survival and recovery.
